ALL-TIOGA COUNTY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: S-VE’S GARRISON HEADS COMPETITIVE LIST (2023-11-29)

TIOGA COUNTY — Spencer-Van Etten senior John Garrison has been among the area’s most competitive distance runners since his days in the modified ranks.

Now, he has capped his scholastic career by being named the 2023 All-Tioga County Boys Cross Country “Runner of the Year.”

Garrison placed ninth at the Class D state championships, those coming after winning Section IV, IAC, and IAC South titles. He also finished first at the Owego, Bob Greene/Newark Valley, Forbes and Marathon invitationals, and was unbeaten in dual meets. He also led the Panthers to the IAC South championship.

The “Newcomer of the Year” is Owego’s Javan Belokur. The sophomore started out the season as a junior varsity runner and placed eighth, third, second and first, respectively, in JV invites. By the time he qualified for the Class B state championships with a seventh-place showing at sectionals, he had knocked 76 seconds off his first time of the season.

River Hawks coach John Heath led his charges to the STAC Central team championship, a runner-up finish at sectionals and fourth at the STAC meet. The “Coach of the Year” sent two runners (plus two girls competitors) to the state meet.
