THE WEEK AHEAD: GOODRICH, SIBLEY TOURNEYS HIGHLIGHT LOCAL EVENTS AS WINTER SEASON BEGINS (2023-11-26)

TIOGA COUNTY — The 30th annual Larry Goodrich Memorial Wrestling Tournament and the 3rd annual Charlie Sibley Memorial Basketball Tournament highlight the week’s local athletic events.

Also on the docket are the 60th annual Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament at Oxford and the Anthony Drago Girls Basketball Tournament at Oneonta.

The winter season actually begins Monday with two bowling programs hitting the road.

Here’s a look at the first week of the winter season.

MONDAY
Bowling: A pair of conference kingpins hit the lanes as STAC boys division champ and STAC tournament runner-up Owego visits Chenango Forks while IAC boys tournament champ Newark Valley heads to Union Springs/Port Byron.

The girls squads will be in action as well.

THURSDAY
Bowling: Newark Valley hosts the first home match of the season with Odessa-Montour coming to town.

FRIDAY
Girls Basketball: Owego’s JV and varsity teams host Ithaca at the Sibley tournament while Newark Valley’s JV and varsity take on Vestal at the Drago tourney.

Wrestling: Newark Valley opens the IAC season hosting Whitney Point while SVEC hits the road for the first day of the Clyde Cole event.

SATURDAY
Boys Basketball: The Owego JV and varsity teams host Moravia at the Sibley tourney.

Girls Basketball: Owego’s JV and varsity teams will compete in either the championship or consolation games at the Sibley tournament. The same goes for the NV squads at the Drago tourney.

Wrestling: Newark Valley hosts the Goodrich tourney while SVEC competes in Day 2 at Clyde Cole.

NOTE: Tioga County football fans get two more games Saturday as Tioga and Waverly play for state championships at the JMA Dome in Syracuse. The Tigers look to three-peat in Class D at noon while the Wolverines go for their first title in the Class C final at 6 p.m.
