TIOGA COUNTY — The Section IV Cross Country Championships and the Candor volleyball team own the day.

The day’s excitement begins with long-distance runners from Candor, Newark Valley, Owego and Spencer-Van Etten converging on the cross country course at Chenango Valley State Park.

The River Hawks’ Jaelyn Chrysler and S-VE’s John Garrison are among the top runners in the section and are expected to secure spots in the state championships.

Other top local runners include NV’s Harley Switzer on the girls side and Owego’s Sully O’Donnell for the boys.

Candor, NV and S-VE compete in Class D and Owego runs in Class B.

Race times: Boys Class D, 11 a.m.; Girls Class C, 11:30 a.m.; Girls Class D, noon; Boys Class C, 12:30 p.m.; Boys Class A, 1:40 p.m.; Boys Class B, 2:05 p.m.; Girls Class A, 2:30 p.m.; Girls Class B, 3 p.m.

Candor hosts the Section IV Class D semifinals beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Pool play includes the top-seeded Coyotes (14-2), No. 2 Delhi (11-2), No. 3 Oxford (10-3) and No. 4 Newfield (9-4).

Each team plays two sets against the other three teams with the top two advancing to the championship match Saturday at 4 p.m at Corning.
