SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: OWEGO LOOKS TO TAKE STING OUT OF HARPURSVILLE/AFTON (2023-10-24)

HARPURSVILLE — The Owego field hockey team opens the Section IV Class B playoffs this afternoon with a trip up Interstate 88 to take on Harpursville/Afton.

The Hornets, who competed in Division I, posted a 6-6 record. Owego played in Division II and compiled a 7-8 record.

Harpursville’s top scoring threat is Miranda Schultz, but the team has a half-dozen other players who are solid scoring threats as well. Goalie Gracie Bomboy spearheads the H/A defensive effort.

The River Hawks put the ball in the cage in every game and have outscored their opponents, 37-35. Most of the scoring has been attributed to Lexi Cheeseman (18 goals) and Makenzie Comparetta (13 goals, 3 assists).

Nine other players have contributed goals and/or assists. They are Madison McEvoy (4 goals, 4 assists), Ashleigh Steele (3 goals, 5 assists), Olivia Crapser (2 goals, 3 assists), Ava Brown (1 goal, 3 assists), Mikayla Wilbur (2 goals, 1 assist), Keira Lane (2 goals), Gabriella Boehme (1 goal, 1 assist), and Laura Loomis and Eleanor Sherman (1 goal apiece).

RaeAnne Craft has made 56 saves in goal.

The winner faces defending state champion Vestal (14-2) in the championship game, which will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday on Tioga’s new artificial turf field.

The Owego roster includes seniors Brown, Comparetta, Olivia and Lane; juniors Jessica Baumbach, Cheeseman, Madeline Heffernan, McEvoy, Steele and Kaelyn Troxel; sophomores Boehme, RaeAnn Craft, Amelia Sherman, Eleanor Sherman, Kayla Teed, Wilbur and Gianna Yaichuk; and freshmen Finleigh Higgins and Loomis.

The Hawks are coached by Ashlee Marsh, who is assisted by Brianna Prince and Taylor Ayres.

The game starts at 3 p.m. at Harpursville High School.
