CANDOR — Despite playing with no substitutes and sometimes understaffed, the SVEC girls soccer team has been holding its own in recent games.
Thursday was no exception as the Eagles battled Trumansburg into overtime before dropping a 3-2 verdict in IAC action.
The Blue Raiders, who routed SVEC, 7-0, in their first meeting had their hands full this time around.
“From seven to nothing the first time we played them to losing in overtime, that just shows how much improvement we've had already this season,” SVEC coach Megan Friscia said. “This is our fourth game in four days, this is our sixth game in seven days, so just the fact that my girls continuously pushed throughout this entire game, I'm just super proud of them.”
The Eagles’ Meradyth Stouffer scored first 15:57 into the game, but T-burg scored at 19:40 to make it 1-1 at halftime.
SVEC went back on top just 5:05 into the second half when Allie Lyon’s direct kick went off the goalkeeper’s hands and bounced around for a couple seconds in front of the goal before Callie Demming put it in the right side of the goal for a 2-1 edge.
T-burg tied the game again at 16:06, then the two teams settled into a defensive battle before the Raiders tallied the game winner 3:55 into the extra session.
Trumansburg outshot SVEC, 26-2, as it improved to 9-1 on the season. The Eagles (3-8) held a 5-3 edge in cornet kicks.
Hannah Magyar was busy in goal for the home team, collecting 17 saves.
SVEC started the season with six straight losses, but have won three of the last five.
“They just continue to come out every half, every minute of the game and they've just given 110 percent, and that's all I've asked for,” Friscia said. “I don't know what else to say. I'm just super proud of them.”
SVEC visits Newark Valley Tuesday.
