IAC CROSS COUNTRY: NEWARK VALLEY SWEEPS AT HOME (2023-09-27)
Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Marcos Escalante and Harley Switzer won their respective races to lead the Newark Valley cross country teams to a sweep in IAC action Tuesday.
The Cardinal boys nipped Dryden by a single point, 27-28, while NV fielded the only full girls squad.
Escalante crossed the finish line first with a time of 16:54, holding off the Purple Lions’ Linkin Hess by five seconds. Tioga’s Talon Wood was third in 17:10, edging out Dryden’s Eliot Couch, who had the same time.
The key to the win, however, was a group of four NV runners which finished ahead of a trio of Dryden competitors. Leland Houston (18:45), Camden King (19:44), James Hackett (19:53) and Logan Woodin (19:55) placed sixth through ninth, scoring 26 team points.
Also competing for the Cardinals were Andrew Lelik (14th, 23:29), Hunter Tyrell (15th, 24:20), Matthew Bauer (16th, 28:37) and Austin Debolt (17th, 38:02).
In the girls event, Switzer posted a time of 19:27 to finish ahead of teammate Brook Illsley, who ran a 20:05.
Olivia Vaughn was fourth (21:45) for NV, Leah Lansing finished sixth (22:48) and Emily LaPorte rounded out the team scoring in seventh (23:17).
Also running for the Cardinals were Malerie Gregrow (9th, 24:20), Elizabeth Waterman (10th, 24:26), Cassidy Downey (13th, 25:14), Madison Bishop (14th, 26:17) and Abigail Escalante (15th, 28:23).
