STAC GIRLS SOCCER: OWEGO POWERS PAST CHENANGO VALLEY IN BATTLE OF STATE-RANKED TEAMS (2023-09-25)
Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — The state rankings came out Monday, and both Owego and Chenango Valley made the grade.
When they clashed on the pitch a few hours later, the River Hawks, ranked seventh in Class A, prevailed over CV, ranked fifth in Class B, 3-2.
Both teams held the other’s all-state stars — the Warriors’ Maddie Hayes and Owego’s Erin McDonald — to five combined shots, but other players stepped up for their respective teams.
In the end, Cassie Doane’s goal with 2:24 remaining in the game proved to be the difference. Her score made it 3-1 and with the Hawks’ defensive prowess present, it would be difficult for CV to overcome a two-goal deficit.
Hayes did cut the gap to 3-2 on a penalty kick with 1:15 on the clock, but Owego held on to run its record to 9-0 on the season.
The Dalton gang, Taylor and Ashlyn, teamed up to put the first goal of the contest on the board with Taylor scoring at 35:35 of the first half.
CV would rally to tie the score at 18:50 and the teams would remain deadlocked until the early moments of the second half.
Ashlyn Dalton scored unassisted just over a minute into the period at 38:13 to put the Hawks up for good.
Owego controlled possession the majority of the game, outshooting the Warriors, 14-7, and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
CV goalkeeper Hannah Watson made eight saves on the night while Olivia Dodge reeled in two for the Hawks.
Owego hosts Oneonta, ranked 16th in Class B, Wednesday night.
