WAVERLY — Statistically, Owego controlled Wednesday’s STAC Central girls soccer showdown with conference newcomer Waverly, but it took a while to show up on the scoreboard.

Erin McDonald scored with 20:36 remaining in the game to give the River Hawks a 1-0 victory. It was her 14th goal of the season.

Owego goalkeeper Olivia Dodge denied Lea VanAllen a scoring opportunity in the early minutes of the contest and Maci Wheeler just missed a corner kick late in the game and the Wolverines shot wide.

Waverly’s Claire Clonch made some key saves at the other end of the pitch.

The Hawks grabbed a 12-3 advantage in shots and had 10 corner kicks to four for waverly.

Clonch made 11 saves in goal and Dodge had three.

Owego improved to 5-0 on the season with its fourth shutout while Waverly slipped to 2-3-1.

The Hawks host Seton Catholic (0-2) Friday night.
