COLLEGE FOOTBALL: TIOGA COUNTY INVADES ALFRED (2023-08-16)

ALFRED, N.Y. — The 2023 college football season here will have a little Tioga County flavor this fall as five local gridders have joined the rosters at Alfred State College and Alfred University.

ASC signed a trio of Newark Valley players while Alfred U inked two from Owego.

The Cardinals’ Caleb Karp, Derek Payne and Landon Spoonhower are among 39 first year players and 11 from Section IV on the Pioneer’s roster. Karp is listed as an offensive lineman, Payne as a defensive lineman and Spoonhower as a running back.

The Saxons roster includes the Indians’ Steven Bidwell at running back and Nate Armstrong at tight end. They are among 58 first year players and eight Section IV players.

Alfred State went 3-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and 5-5 overall in 2022 while Alfred University was 1-5 in the Empire 8 and 2-8 overall.

Alfred U hosts Hobart on Sept. 1 in its season opener while Alfred State begins on the road Sept. 2 at Misericordia.
