THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S LAWSON, ELMIRA'S MORDVINOVA HEADLINE GIRLS TRACK & FIELD ALL-REGION TEAM AS 'ATHLETES OF THE YEAR;' CANDOR'S MORSE EARNS FIRST-TEAM HONORS (2023-07-05)

The Sports Reports
It was a banner year for distance runners in girls’ track & field circuit this year, with several area runners bringing home state hardware.

The top two were Corning’s Sarah Lawson and Elmira’s Vicky Mordvinova, and they are this year’s overall “Athletes of the Year” for girls’ track & field.

Lawson was third in the 3,000 meters at the New York State meet with a time of 9:47.87, while also helping Corning’s 4-x-800 relay earn a spot at states. She also posted good times in the 800 (2:22.96) and the 1,500 (4:53.01).

Mordvinova was a state medalist in the 1,500 in 4:32.91, while also earning a spot at States in the 800, running an area-best time of 2:11.59.

Northeast Bradford’s Gracelyn Laudermilch is the “Track Athlete of the Year.” The sophomore took eighth at the PIAA Championships in the 3,200 with a time of 11:17.59, while also earning a spot at state in the 1600. Her best time in the mile this year was 5:10.25.

The “Field Athlete of the Year” is Horseheads’ Tess Eisner, who took fourth at states in the long jump with a personal-best of 17-feet, 6 1/4-inches, along with taking seventh in the triple jump with another personal-best of 37-feet, 3-inches.

The “Relay of the Year” belongs to Towanda’s 4-x-400 of Anna Dunn, Eliza Fowler, Kelci Carle, and Kelsea Allen-Smith. The foursome took sixth at the PIAAs, and had a season-best time of 4:04.52.

The “Newcomer of the Year” is Corning’s Celia McLaughlin, who was a state qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles with an area-best time of 15.80 seconds.

The Corning coaching staff, led by head coach Joe Melanson, once again out-did themselves this year, with several state qualifiers, and a state medalist in Lawson, as they continue to dominate track and field in the area. Melanson is the "Coach of the Year."

(The Sports Reports covers 24 school districts in four counties, and Corning.)
