COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: NEWARK VALLEY’S MALONE SIGNS TO BE A SOARING EAGLE (2023-06-20)

NEWARK VALLEY — Mackenzie Malone is changing her field hockey "feathers" from a Newark Valley Cardinal to an Elmira College Soaring Eagle.

Malone will be wielding a stick for the Eagles this fall, joining forces with NV teammate Sandy Vaughn. The two signed their letters of intent at a group ceremony in May.

She was attracted to EC's beauty and liked its proximity to Newark Valley, about an hour’s drive away, most of which is on the highway.

“I chose Elmira because the campus was beautiful, and it was close to home,” she said.

Malone, who also played softball this past year, has a passion for field hockey, and believes she can contribute to the program.

“My love for field hockey and the effort I put towards the game,” she said. “I also think Sandy and I work well together on defense, so we work well together.”

“Mackenzie Malone is a competitor on the field,” Newark Valley head coach Jessica Doehring said. “She puts forth great effort and is willing to do what is needed to help the team. Mackenzie is a versatile player which will benefit her team as she will be able to fill any role needed.

“It has been a pleasure watching her play and I am excited to see how much more she has to give and accomplish.”

Elmira currently has two Section IV players on its roster, Moravia’s Lindsey Smith and Whitney Point’s Katelin Bailey.

Malone will study Criminal Justice.
