NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley’s Landon Spoonhower saw his senior football season cut short by an injury, but his accomplishments up to that point did not go unnoticed by Alfred State College.
Spoonhower signed to continue his football career with the Saxons during a group signing June 5.
The school caught his attention for a couple of reasons.
“I chose the school I’ll be attending because it felt like a second home to me when I arrived there and to pursue football while in a trade program,” he said.
“He has a tall frame and great length,” said Newark Valley head coach Ted Hardenstine. “I would describe him as a ‘gym rat.’ If you open the weight room, he will be there working hard.
“Landon is a smooth athlete, and he has great hands. His dedication to the weight room, strength, and physical toughness are all characteristics that will allow him to excel at the next level.”
Spoonhower believes his “dedication and obsession with the sport of football” will be positives for the program.
The Pioneers compete in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. Alfred State went 3-3 in the ECFC last fall and 5-5 overall. The team had five Section IV players on the roster, four of whom were first-years or sophomores.
Spoonhower will study Auto Body Repair.
