BERKSHIRE — Newark Valley’s Hayley Beebe has logged the miles and put in the hours in a career dedicated to basketball.
Beebe also played soccer and softball, but it was her passion for hoops which emerged at an early age as she started playing with club teams in the second grade.
Those organizations included Red Hot Hoops, Lady Sizzlers, BC Bolts, ATA (Alpha Tier Athletics), NDO (No Days Off), Twin Tier Elite and the Armadillos (her current tournament team).
All that work culminated May 25 when she signed to continue her career at Niagara County Community College.
“I chose to accept a basketball athletic scholarship to play for the Niagara Thunderwolves because I like their highly competitive and extremely successful basketball program,” Beebe said. “I also really like the location and the small town feel of the college.
“A huge bonus is I will be pretty close to my best friend/sister Brianna’s college.”
Brianna Beebe earned her associate’s degrees in one year at NCCC and was part of a team that played in the national championship tournament.
This past season, the T-wolves returned to nationals and finished the season with a 29-5 record while capturing their fifth consecutive regional title.
Hayley Beebe feels she can contribute to that success.
“I’m a super competitive and determined hard worker, and I play at a very fast pace,” Beebe said. “Coach (Nate) Beutel likes to push the ball and play fast which fits with my style of play perfectly. Along with his extreme competitiveness, I feel we will be a great duo.”
As a senior, Beebe scored 332 points, including 52 3-pointers and made 78 percent of her free throw attempts. She also dished out 77 assists, made 72 steals, and grabbed 95 rebounds.
For her career (including her sophomore year which was the 12-game covid season) she had 578 points, 217 rebounds, 168 assists, 224 steals 224 and was a 72-percent free throw shooter (101-for-140)
NV posted a 57-4 during Beebe’s career, which included two league titles, two section titles, one regional title and a berth in the 2022 state championship game.
Beebe will major in Business Administration.
“I don't have to tell you how hard Hayley worked and how long she did that work for so many years,” NV coach Greg Schweiger said. “I don't have to tell you how hard she plays and what a competitor she is.
“Certainly the last two years have been very special and her leadership on those two championship-level teams is what took us from good to great.”
Several of her club coaches attended the signing and paid her similar praises.
“It means so much to have you all here with me on my special moment,” Beebe said. “Everyone in this room tonight in one way or another has had a huge impact on my basketball experience through the years, whether you coached me or were a teammate or supported one of my fundraisers or if you were just a fan in the stands.”
