OWEGO — During the past two seasons, the Owego boys soccer team won two Section IV Class B championships and played in two state playoff tournaments, and Jace Riegel’s skillful footwork was key to those accomplishments.

On Tuesday, Riegel was one of a dozen Indian athletes to put pen to paper in a mass signing ceremony, choosing Oneonta-based Hartwick College to continue his career.

“I chose Hartwick because of the great business background of the school, and the men’s soccer head coach, John Scott,” he said. “Coach Scott is the perfect coach for my playing style and I hope to perform to my maximum potential.”

“Hartwick soccer is getting a fantastic individual in Jace Riegel,” Owego head coach Alessio DeMichele said. “He is a dedicated player with a big-game mentality. Jace has been a leader for every team he plays on thanks to his ability as a player and more importantly his attitude to improving himself and teammates around him.

“He can play in several different positions as his tactical IQ and athletic ability will help him adjust to the next level. It has been a pleasure having him as a representative of the Owego program!”

Riegel will major in Business.

His cousin and teammate, Kyle Riegel, has also signed with Hartwick.

Hartwick was 6-9-3 overall last season, went 3-4-2 in the Empire 8 Conference and advanced to the E8 semifinals.
