OWEGO — Owego’s “Twin Towers” will continue their basketball careers at Wells College. Joe and John Bangel made the commitment at a mass signing ceremony Tuesday.

While mom and dad won’t have to fret over which game to attend, the boys’ choice to become members of the Express also keeps them close to home in Aurora, New York.

“I chose Wells College because I loved the campus and the community that’s there,” Joe said.

“I chose Wells College because of its uniqueness and location,” stated John.

According to Owego head coach Chris Evans, they will bring more than their 6-foot-6 frames to the Wells hardwood.

“What do John and Joe have to offer Wells College?” asked Evans. “Well, I am certain they can offer more than just being basketball players. They are both kind, respectful, insightful and personable human beings. They will make Wells College a better university simply by stepping on campus.

Still, the duo has plenty to offer on the court.

According to John, his “basketball IQ and abilities to compete at a high level” will be a plus for the Wells program.

“I’m bringing my competitive nature, and willingness to want to work and win,” added Joe of what he can contribute to the program.

“In terms of basketball, John is slightly ahead athletically - and he really shot the ball well the last four weeks of our season. His ability to rebound above the rim, to block shots, and to finish shots off a variety of moves will serve him well.

“Don’t sleep on Joe, though. He will continue to progress as his basketball IQ will be a strong asset to the team. He can be a knockdown jump shooter and will only get stronger and quicker as he grows into his body.”

The Express were 9-7 in the UEC last season and 14-12 overall.

The twins will both major in Business with a minor in sports management.
