NY STATE BOYS GOLF: CANDOR’S BANKS RETURNS TO CHAMPIONSHIPS (2023-06-03)

ELMIRA — Candor’s Jacob Banks put together another impressive season on the links and has rewarded himself by earning a trip to the 2023 NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championships.

It’s the senior’s second trip to the state tournament, which is being held Sunday and Monday at Mark Twain Golf Course. Banks represented SVEC in 2022.

Last year, he placed 69th overall after shooting an 80 on Day 1 and an 86 on Day 2.

This year, he will let the chips lie where they fall, so to speak.

“My expectations are relatively low for this tournament,” he said. “I’m just very excited to have to have the opportunity to play in this event. I’m just going to go out there and try my best and swing freely. If I do that, the results will take care of themselves.”

“I am proud of Jacob and all his great accomplishments during his scholastic golf career,” said Candor head coach Kevin Jester. “He has been one the leaders of this team for many years, and he and his teammates have turned the Candor golf program around and into champions.

“As far as the state championships, I expect Jacob to prepare and compete as well as he always does.I know he finished 69th last year and a reasonable goal would be to improve on that, although any result would be ok with me, he has already achieved so much.”

Banks hopes to take advantage of the fact he has had a chance to compete at this high a level.

I think last years experience will be very helpful for me this year because I will understand the nerves that I will feel and I won’t be surprised. I will also have an idea of how the course will play and a better understanding of how to play the course effectively.

Regardless of where he finishes this time around, his time with the Candor and SVEC programs has been highly successful.

Banks and his teammates won back-to-back IAC titles, both as Small School and overall champions, and the Indians also won the Section IV Class D crown this season.

SVEC won 19 consecutive dual matches in 2021 and 2022, and Candor went 12-0 this season.

At the state tournament, Banks will partner with Enzo Clerici, a sophomore from Section V, and Section VI senior Ethan Provino.

The trio tees off at 10:56 a.m. Sunday on No. 10.

Monday’s pairings will be decided following the first round.
