NY STATE GIRLS GOLF: SVEC’S GILLETTE LOOKING TO ENJOY CHAMPIONSHIP EXPERIENCE (2023-06-03)

REXFORD, N.Y. — SVEC’s Lauren Gillette reached her goal and is now looking to enjoy a couple days of golf at the 2023 NYSPHSAA Girls Golf Championships being held at The Edison Club Sunday and Monday.
“I am not really sure what states will hold,” Gillette said. “I just want to have fun and play golf.”
“I'm over the moon with pride for Lauren's hard work and vision for her to be at this state competition,” said SVEC head coach Nicole Ramos. “This was all her and I am honored to be along for the ride with her.”
“Honestly, I am just happy that I made it and that was all I really hoped for this year,” Gillette added. “I hope I do well, but I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself.
“Being a state qualifier means a lot to me. It was my one goal to improve from last year and I'm happy I achieved it. I'm very nervous about the match but I am still proud of myself that I made it.”
“She declared this at the beginning of the season and it happened. Never underestimate the power of our thoughts,” said Ramos. “I hope she plays rounds she is proud of this weekend and that is all we can ask for.”
Gillette was the Eagles’ top golfer in every match but one. She carded a season low of 42 at the Apalachin Golf Course. Her best score on SVEC’s home course, Catatonk Creek Golf Course, was a 43.
She shot a 97 at the Section IV Girls Golf Championships at Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Horseheads to finish eighth. The top nine make the state team.
Section IV has the youngest team at this year’s tournament with just one senior, Horseheads’ Brooklyn Moffe. The team includes two 7th-graders and three freshmen.
Gillette will tee off Sunday at 11:32 a.m. on the 10th hole. Her playing partners will be Emily Zigrossi from Section V, Emily Morelli of Section VI and Section XI’s Ally Karkota.
Morelli, a senior, is a repeat qualifier, as is Karkota, who is also a senior. Zigrossi is an 8th-grader.
The Edison Club is a private 27-hole golf course nestled on the rolling hills of the north bank of the Mohawk River, above the bluffs.
