SECTION IV GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: CANDOR’S MORSE QUALIFIES FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2023-06-01)

ENDICOTT — Candor’s Kara Morse earned a trip to the state track & field championships but it took her a few extra attempts at the high jump to pull it off.

The senior tied her own school record for the second time in eight days, clearing 5-2 at the Section IV Division II state qualifier Thursday.

She and Lansing’s Kristen Johnson tied for second and since they met the state standard, one would advance to next week's state meet. The two would have a jump-off with Morse prevailing.

Chenango Valley Delaney Walters and Morse came into the meet with each having cleared 5-2. Walters hit 5-3 for the win. All three jumpers rank among the state’s top 50.

Owego’s Alexandra Senko set another personal record in the triple jump with a leap of 34-9 ½ and also recorded a PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.55 seconds. She was second in Division II and third overall in the jump, and third in D-2 and fourth overall in the hurdles.

The Indians’ Stella Palladino posted a PR as well in the 100. Her time of 12.8 seconds was second in D-2 and third overall.

Jaelyn Chrysler placed third in Division II in the 1500, clocking 5:06.12. She was fourth overall.

Kylee Carrier finished seventh in the D-2 discus with a throw of 87-9, which was good for ninth overall.

Candor’s Ayasha Schweiger recorded a time of 8:54.87 in the 2000 steeplechase and Newark Valley’s Harley Switzer had a time of 5:42.61.

In the relays, Owego was eighth in the 4x800 (11:21.29) and ninth in the 4x400 (4:32.16).

The 4x8 consisted of Abigail Fahey, Lilly LaFever, Cameron Pichany and Abigail McHugh, and the 4x 4 was made up of Alexandra Senko, Sidney Senko, Taylor Dalton and Palladino.

The NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 9-10 at Middletown High School.
