ON TAP TODAY: FLAG FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, TRACK & FIELD STATE QUALIFIERS TAKE CENTER STAGE (2023-05-31)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — As the spring sports season winds toward its closure, several Tioga County athletes will vie for spots in the NYSPHSAA Track & Field Championships.

Also on the docket is the first “true” Section IV Flag Football Championship.

TRACK & FIELD
Athletes from Candor, Newark Valley, Owego and S-VE will be among those competing in the first day of the state qualifier at Union-Endicott.

The top two finishers in each event advance to the state meet, plus the possibility of additional qualifiers.

Local favorites on Day 1 are Owego’s Gabe Snyder, the top seed in Division II pole vault, and the Indians’ Jace Stuart, seeded second in the 3200-meter run.

Several others are in contention for podium spots.

Competition begins at 5 p.m.

FLAG FOOTBALL
Owego hosts Chenango Forks for the Section IV Division II championship.

This and the Division I title game are the first “true” championship games as 2022 was a test season and the section only had six teams.

The Indians defeated Forks during the regular season, 20-8.

Quarterback Kylie Grippen went 15-for-20 for 216 yards with two touchdowns, and Taylor Dalton caught six passes for 136 yards and a TD. Oriah Boland, Saylor Ayers, Jordan Greeno and Sophia Palladino had multiple receptions as well.

Brooklyn Gaurnier led the defense with five “tackles” while Bella Silvestri, Alex Aubel and Olivia Crapser also had multiple tackles.

The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
