TIOGA COUNTY — One of the top golfers in Section IV and a multi-talented track star have been named the Tioga County Sports Report / New York Army National Guard “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending May 27.

CANDOR’S BANKS IS BOYS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Jacob Banks repeats as the athlete of the week.

The senior, who led the Indians to a 12-0 record and qualified for the NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championships for the second consecutive year the previous week, helped Candor secure a pair of team titles last week.

On Monday, Banks, who along with teammate Taylor Brock shot 81, led Candor to its first-ever Section IV team title at the Class D Boys Golf Championship.

Banks captured the medalist honor with a 78 the very next day as the Indians repeated as IAC Small School and overall champions (they were merged with S-VE in 2022). Candor defeated the second place team by 18 strokes and the Large School champ by 32 strokes.

OWEGO’S SENKO IS GIRLS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Alexandra Senko was a quadrupled winner as the Indians captured the team title at the Section IV Class B Girls Track & Field Championship Tuesday.

The senior won the 100- and 400-meter hurdles events, and set a personal record in winning the triple jump. She also ran a leg of the victorious 4x400 relay.

Her triple jump of 34-7 ¼ topped her previous best by more than 2 ½ feet. It’s the third longest in Section IV Division II and ranks fourth in the entire section. She was previously ranked 16th overall.

Senko clocked 17.18 in the 100 hurdles, winning by more than three-quarters of a second, and her time of 1:11.18 in the 400 hurdles was more than seven seconds faster than the runner-up.

She teamed with Sidney Senko, Olivia Dodge and Stella Palladino for a time of 4:34.63 in the relay.
