HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF: GILLETTE QUALIFIES FOR THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AS SHE TAKES EIGHTH AT SECTIONALS (10 PHOTOS) (2023-05-25)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — Lauren Gillette felt like it was possible she could make it to the state meet.
The Spencer Van-Etten/Candor golfer knew that she’d have to play well, but if she did she could possibly qualify for states.
“I had a feeling,” she said. “I was very nervous, but there was a small hope I could do it.”
Gillette shot an 97 on Thursday at Soaring Eagles Golf Course to finish eighth at the Section IV Golf Championships, with the top nine making it to the state meet.
For Gillette there were a few key holes that helped her qualify for states.
“A couple of par fours and a par three, those really solidified the fact I got in,” Gillette said.
Throughout the round the SVEC golfer knew she would be close when it came to making states.
“I knew it was going to be close, but I had a feeling if I did as well as I did, or better, I could make it,” she said.
Her group was one of the earlier groups finishing on Thursday which left Gillette waiting and hoping her score held up to make it to states.
“It was very anxious and watching everyone else go up on the board, it made me so happy when it was over,” she said.
The state championships are June 4-5 at the Edison Club in Rexford.
“I’m nervous, but definitely excited,” Gillette said of states.
SVEC finished fourth as a team at 459. Horseheads won at 384.
Annika Walle had a top 20 finish, taking 19th at 113. Lily Kunzman was tied for 24th at 121 and Ashlynd Goodrich was 31st at 128, while Gwen Shaw was 33rd at 130.
