IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY EXPLODES FOR 30 RUNS IN WIN OVER NEWFIELD (2023-05-10)

NEWFIELD — Newark Valley erupted for 14 runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 30-16 victory over Newfield in IAC softball action Monday.
The Cardinals’ big inning included a bases-loaded double by Kaden Rockwell and a two-run double by Rosie Wandell.
The surge also included a two-run single by Jenna Vosburgh, four runs scored on wild pitches, seven stolen bases, six walks, three errors and three hit batters.
NV grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Trojans countered with 11 in the home half of the first.
The Cardinals scored a trio of runs in each of the second and third innings, and five more in the fourth to take a 16-14 advantage into their final at-bats.
Leah Austin Whittaker went 3-for-6 with five runs and three RBI; Wandell was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI; and Katie Berghorn scored five times on six walks.
Rockwell had four runs and three RBI, and Mackenzie Malone added four runs and two RBI. Ruthanne Walburn, Sandy Vaughn and Hattie Sue Hines all contributed to the offensive attack.
NV had 10 hits, was issued 22 walks and struck out just once.
Wandell got the win after throwing 4 ⅔ innings of relief. She gave up five hits and a walk, and five runs, only one was earned. She struck out four.
