IAC SOFTBALL: SVEC RIDES 11-RUN SURGE TO VICTORY OVER NEWFIELD (2023-05-04)
Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — An 11-run uprising, highlighted by a Jill Holmes grand slam, carried SVEC to a 20-8, 5-inning IAC softball victory over Newfield Thursday.
Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles loaded the bases on Grace Handy and Adriena Farmer singles, and a walk to Mikayla Duncan, but Newfield turned a double play on a line drive to the first baseman.
Just when a big inning looked thwarted, Handy and Farmer scored on a passed ball to boost the lead to 8-6, then Raegan Sudnikovich was hit by a pitch and Faith Brenchley walked to reload the sacks. That’s when Holmes stepped to the plate and delivered the slam over the center fielder’s head.
Katelyn Klym followed that with a solo shot to left, and Handy and Duncan wrapped walks around a Farmer bunt base hit. Prior to the Duncan base on balls, Handy stole home and Farmer scored on a passed ball to make it a 15-6 game.
A walk to Cheylee Campbell and back-to-back RBI doubles by Taylor and Sudnikovich pushed the lead to 17-6.
Holmes led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo blast to right, and Klym and Handy followed with consecutive triples, with Handy’s hit adding another run to make it 19-6.
The Trojans took advantage of five walks to close the gap to 19-8 in the fifth and SVEC added one more run in its half of the inning as Sudnikovich singled, stole second and scored on a Brenchley base hit.
The Eagles scored their first three runs on Brenchley’s two-run homer and a Klym run on a wild pitch in the first.
In the second, SVEC tacked on another trio of runs on a Taylor single, a Sudnikovich RBI double, and two errors by the catcher.
Meanwhile, Newfield scored five runs in the top of the second on a pair of singles and a half-dozen walks.
Holmes, Sudnikovich and Klym posted 3-hit performances at the plate. Holmes was 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI, Sudnikovich went 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI, and Klym was 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.
Brenchley went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, Handy was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI; Farmer was 2-for-2 with two runs, and Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Duncan and Campbell scored one run apiece.
Sudnikovich earned the win in the circle, striking out five and walking six, and not allowing a hit in relief.
