IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY COMES UP SHORT AGAINST DRYDEN BATS (2023-04-23)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley fell victim to a 6-run first inning and a 6-run fifth as Dryden posted an 18-7 IAC softball victory Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Lions’ early lead was highlighted by a Prignon home run with one away. They also took advantage of two singles, two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a dropped third strike to pad their cushion.

In the fifth, Dryden would parlay five singles, a double and a walk into an 18-3 lead.

NV responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Joslyn Wright singled, stole second and scored on Katie Berghorn’s ground-ball single.

Kahlen Cornell connected for a two-run single in the second while the Cardinals got a pair of runs back in the third.

A walk to Groover and an error off the bat of Berghorn set the stage for Leah Austin Whittaker’s two run single to right field.

Leading, 8-3, the Lions picked up a run on a single and an error in the fourth.

They scored twice on a double, single and two walks in the sixth to go up, 17-4, and added their final run in the seventh on a walk and error.

NV picked up a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

In the fifth, Leah Austin Whittaker singled with two away, courtesy runner Jenna Vosbugh stole second, then scored on a ground ball error off the bat of Mackenzie Malone.

Sandy Vaughn and Rosie Wandell singled to start the Cardinals off in the bottom of the sixth. Abby Groover belted a double to center, plating Vaughn and Vosburgh.

The Cardinals collected eight hits on the day with Groover going 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, and Whittaker going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Berghorn contributed a hit, run and RBI; Wright and Vaughn chipped in with one hit and one run each; Vosburgh scored twice and Wandell tacked on a hit.

Cornell, an NCAA Division II commit for Dryden, went 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI to lead Dryden, which improved to 5-1 overall. She also struck out nine batters in the circle, scattering eight hits and three walks, and giving up four earned runs.

Wandell struck out seven in six innings of relief.

NV (0-7) visits Edison Wednesday.
