IAC SOFTBALL: NOTRE DAME FENDS OFF UPSET-MINDED SVEC (2023-04-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — The SVEC softball team has been on a roll recently and nearly pulled off a major upset before dropping a 4-2 decision to Elmira Notre Dame in IAC action Friday.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, and with two away, the Eagles tightened things up when Raegan Sudnikovich smacked a double to center field and Faith Brenchley followed with a single to center, scoring Sudnikovich.

Jill Holmes stepped to the plate and singled to left, then Katelyn Klym singled to left to push Brenchley across to make it a 3-2 contest.

The Crusader’ Shannon Maloney doubled to lead off the seventh, then scored on an error two batters later.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Olivia Switzer retired the side in the SVEC half of the inning to end the game.

ND grabbed a 2-0 lead in its first at-bats. Ava Mustico led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a Payton Rimany-Miller base hit.

Miller would steal second and score on an error off the bat of Switzer.

The two pitchers would then combine to record nine straight outs until Klym singled to start the bottom of the second.

The aces would record another seven consecutive outs before a walk to SVEC’s Cheylee Campbell broke up that streak.

Switzer's triple to lead off the fourth would lead to another run as Lawson Bigelow scored her with a fly ball to center.

Klym responded with a triple to start off the bottom of the fourth, but Switzer fanned the side to get out of trouble.

Notre Dame collected seven hits with Mustico accounting for two.

Klym went 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Eagles’ 8-hit attack and Brenchley was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Sudnikovich had a hit and a run, and Holmes and Mikayla Duncan added one hit apiece.

Switzer struck out 15 batters while allowing just one walk.

Roni Presher struck out four and did not surrender a walk.

SVEC (3-3) heads to Dryden (3-0) Monday.
