Cole Patrick claimed a spot
in the Wyalusing line-up right off the bat, and made an immediate
impact for the Rams. He headlines the Baker’s Dozen as
The Sports Reports’ 2022-23 “
Boys Newcomer of the Winter.”
Patrick posted a 36-13 record on the season, and was unbeaten in NTL Duals.
Patrick
finished second at the North Section Championships, fourth at the
District 4 Championships, and second at the Northeast Regional
Championships. He was 0-2 at States, losing to eventual medalist Josef
Garshnick of United in the opening round.

Jeremiah Parker, freshman, basketball, Notre Dame: Parker
averaged 20 points per game in his first season for the Crusaders. He
was one of the top scorers in the region, despite teams keying on him
night in, and night out. He was The Sports Reports Boys Basketball
“Newcomer of the Year.”
J.B. Burbage, sophomore, basketball, Troy: Burbage
was a double-double threat in his first year on varsity, averaging 12.2
points per game. He was key in the Trojans winning a district title
Matthias Welles, 8th-grader, wrestling, Waverly: Welles
worked his way into the Waverly lineup at the outset of the season, and
put together a 29-12 campaign despite consistently wrestling juniors
and seniors. He won an IAC title, finished second at the Section IV, B
Qualifier, and was second at the Section IV, Division 2 Championships
after upsetting state-ranked Hunter Page of Oxford-Greene in the
semifinals. He was 1-2 at States.
Jadon Heidl, junior, basketball, Candor: Heidl was an impact played in his first varsity season. He averaged 17.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.
Jake VanHouten, junior, basketball, Waverly: VanHouten,
a force on both ends of the floor, averaged 9.7 points and 9.7 rebounds
per game, and led the team in blocked shots. He also shot 51.9 percent
from the field.
Audy Vanderpool, senior, wrestling, Towanda:
Vanderpool dropped 100 pounds to get on the mat, then dropped plenty of
wrestlers once he got there, winning 30 matches (32-14) at heavyweight,
and reaching the Northeast Regionals. He finished third at the North
Section, and fifth at the District 4 Class AA Championships.
Frankie D’Angelo, 7th-grader, bowling, Elmira: D’Angelo,
a 7th-graader, averaged 194 this year, and he came up huge in the
state tournament, striking out in the 10th of the final game to help
Elmira clinch the state title. The Express won the first state title in
any sport in Elmira Express history and only the second in the history
of the Elmira School District, the first being Southside bowling.
Nolyn Proudfoot, 7th-grader, basketball, Corning: As
a 7th-grader playing varsity, Proudfoot put up 11.4 points a game and
was 43-for-132 for 33 percent from behind the 3-point arc. He scored 183
points this year, had 22 deflections, 17 steals. drew four charges, and
shot 83 percent from the free-throw line.
Joey Crisco, 7th-grader, swimming, Corning:
Crisco, a 7th-grader placed fourth in the 200-yard IM and third in the
100 breaststroke at the Section IV Championships. He hit a split of
52.05 seconds anchoring the 400 free relay, which helped Corning clinch a
tie with Horseheads for the team title at sectionals.
Xavier Watson, sophomore, basketball, Athens:
Ultra-athletic and a good defender, Watson averaged 7.1 points, 4.9
rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He also made 14 3-pointers.
Cooper Robinson, freshman, wrestling, Athens:
Robinson battled injuries late in the season, and still finished his
initial varsity campaign with a 28-12 record. He finished third at the
North Section championships, and seventh at the District 4
Championships.
Logan Rhodes, freshman, wrestling, Newark Valley: Rhodes posted a 20-10 record in his first varsity season. He finished fourth at the Section IV qualifier.
