Tioga senior Emily Sindoni capped a record-setting season with her second consecutive Section IV championship to lock down The Sports Reports Wrestler of the Year” honor.

The senior 126-pounder helped christen the inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational, the Southern Tier Memorial and the Jarvis Girls Invitational by pinning her way to titles in all three tournaments.

Sindoni recorded her 100th career victory at the sectional tournament and was ranked No. 1 nationally at 132 pounds in the latest usawrestling.org poll, which was released March 24.

She was also selected the Valley Sports Report "Female Athlete of the Winter "and the All-Tioga County Girls "Wrestler of the Year."

The “Newcomer of the Year” honor is being shared between Horseheads’ Hailey Berry and Tioga’s Kyah Nelson.

Berry, a first-year senior, went 30-6 and won a Section IV championship at 132 pounds. She also captured championships at the STAC, U-E Tradesman and Oneonta tournaments. She was also a runner-up at the Southern Tier Memorial and was a NYSPHSAA Invitational qualifier.

Nelson, a 7th-grader, came back from a serious illness which hospitalized her to compete in the NYSPHSAA invitational just five days later, and went 1-2. She went on to win a Section IV championship at 145 pounds. She also won the Jarvis Girls Invitational and Southern Tier Memorial, bumping up to 152 in the latter.

Athens’ Jay White is the “Coach of the Year.” The Wildcats won the Jarvis Girls Invitational team title and the Southern Tier Memorial. Athens also qualified three wrestlers for the state championships, placing one on the podium.
