ALL-TIOGA COUNTY GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY’S GARDNER HEADLINES ALL-STAR CAST (2023-03-25)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Newark Valley’s Cha Gardner played a key role in the Cardinals’ second consecutive trip to the state playoffs and has been named the 2022-23 All-Tioga County “Girls Basketball Player of the Year.”

She recorded 15 double-doubles and two triple-doubles, and averaged 15.7 points (360) and 14 rebounds (322) per game. She also averaged three blocks (68), three assists and three steals per game.

Gardner dominated the game at both ends of the court and became the consummate all-around player. Her skill set earned her the IAC South Large School MVP and the BCANY All-Section IV Class B Player of the Year.

Waverly’s Kennedy Westbrook is the “Offensive Player of the Year.” The senior standout averaged 19.8 points per game. She scored 416 points and ended her career with 1,107. She canned 42 3-pointers in the process, but was also unselfish with the ball, averaging four assists per game. She also played a key role on the boards, leading the Wolverines in rebounding.

Westbrook was an IAC South Large School first team pick and a BCANY All-Section IV Class B first team choice. The “Defensive Player of the Year” is Newark Valley’s Hayley Beebe. A constant menace around the perimeter, she averaged 3.1 steals per game. More important to the Cardinals’ defensive scheme was the way the senior guard frequently disrupted an opponent’s offensive flow.

The “Newcomer of the Year” is Candor’s Nicola Soper. The freshman averaged 8.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals for the area’s youngest team. She was an IAC South Small School first team selection.

NV’s Greg Schweiger is the “Coach of the Year.” He led the Cardinals to a 22-1 record, a Section IV Class B championship and their second consecutive appearance in the state playoffs. NV also won its third straight IAC South Large School and IAC Large School titles, and Schweiger also recorded his 100th victory during the 2022-23 season.

Schweiger was voted the BCANY All-Section IV Class B Coach of the Year.
