ALL-TIOGA COUNTY WRESTLING: TIOGA DOMINATES STAR-STUDDED MAT LINEUP (2023-03-23)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Caden Bellis and Ousmane Duncanson helped spearhead Tioga wrestling’s run to a pair of team state championships while garnering individual state titles as well. With those efforts the duo shares the 2022-23 All-Tioga County “Wrestler of the Year” honor.

Duncanson picked up his second consecutive state title by pinning three of his four opponents at 160 pounds. He was 37-0 with 24 falls and also recorded eight more bonus-point victories. Duncanson was one of two Section IV wrestlers to go undefeated and among 10 in the entire state.

Bellis finished the season with a 33-1 record at 138 pounds as he captured his first individual title. The lone came at the Southern Tier Memorial against Eligh Rivera of Lake Highland Prep, Florida, who went on to win a national prep championship. Bellis recorded 21 pins and nine additional bonus-point wins on the season.

Waverly 8th-grader Matthias Welles is the “Newcomer of the Year.” Competing at 189 pounds, he went 27-12 on the season with 17 falls and eight more bonus-point wins. A state qualifier, he reached the podium in six of nine tournaments.

Four of his losses came against state qualifiers, including three place-winners. He also lost to a prep national bronze medalist and a 2022 New York state placer.

The “Coach of the Year” is Tioga’s Kris Harrington, who guided the Tigers to a fourth state team title and second straight dual meet championship.

Harrington led the team to its fourth consecutive NYSPHSAA Division II tournament title and second straight D-2 state dual meet crown. The Tigers also went 13-0 in dual meets to extend their win streak to 31 matches.

In addition, the Tigers have won six consecutive Section IV Division II championships, five straight sectional qualifying tournaments, four consecutive Section IV Division II dual meet titles and four IAC championships in a row dating back to 2018. They did not compete in the IACs in 2019 due to a conflict with the state duals and there was no tournament in 2021 due to COVID-19.
