TIOGA COUNTY — Girls wrestling is still relatively new to Tioga County, although there are a handful of young ladies who have been tangling with the boys for the past few years.
Tioga’s Emily Sindoni is a 6-year veteran who has wrestled more than 100 matches against the guys, and is the 2022-23 All-Tioga County
“Girls Wrestler of the Year.”
The senior pinned her way to the title at the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational, the first girls “state championship” tournament.
Ranked No. 1 in the nation, Sindoni posted a trio of first-period falls before pinning another nationally-ranked opponent. She also decked three opponents in 2:20 to win her second sectional crown, recording her 102nd career victory in the process.
She went 4-0 at the Jarvis Tournament and 3-0 at the Southern Tier Memorial with seven pins, six coming in the first period and pinned both opponents in the first period at the IAC championships. The only match to go the full six minutes was a major decision at the Oneonta Rotary Tournament.
Tioga 7th-grader Kyah Nelson is the
“Newcomer of the Year.”
She made her varsity debut at the Jarvis Tournament, pinning all four opponents to grab the gold. She then went 5-0 with five pins at the Oneonta Rotary Girls Tournament and pinned both of her opponents to win the Southern Tier Memorial.
Then, after battling an illness that nearly cut her season short, she bounced back to win a Section IV championship with a pin and a decision.
