GENEVA, N.Y. — Eight members of the Newark Valley field hockey team have been selected to the 2022 NFHCA High School National Academic Squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

More than 2,650 student-athletes from more than 270 high schools across the country have been named to the

The High School National Academic Squad program, sponsored by OPA Winning Teams, recognizes those high school seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted grade-point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 — or the equivalent — through the first quarter/semester of the 2022-23 school year, and were nominated by their NFHCA member coach.

Seniors and juniors who have achieved a minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.9 out of 4.0 — or the equivalent — through the first quarter/semester of the 2023-23 school year have been recognized as Scholars of Distinction.

The Cardinals’ Katie Berghorn and Virginia Mertson have been named Scholars of Distinction.

Joining the duo on the team are Karli Berghorn, Michelle Brooks, Hailey Engbith, Mackenzie Malone, Anna Stebbins and Sandra Vaughn

The Berghorns, Brooks, Malone, Mertson and Vaughn are repeat selections.
