SYRACUSE — SVEC’s Janelle Marsh competed in the NYSPHSAA Girls Composite State Championships at Strike N’ Spare Lanes here Saturday.

While she experienced some mixed results in her final high school match, the Candor senior enjoyed the experience.

“I had lots of fun,” Marsh said. “My team, they're a good group of girls.”

Marsh would place 30th out of 66 competitors and was fifth on the Section IV all-star team.

She opened the tournament with a 181, then slipped to a 176 in game two, but got hot late in game three to roll a 209 and finish with a 566 series.

In the second round. Marsh bested her earlier score, carrying a 586 series. She started out with a 194, which was followed by a 189. She capped her day with a 203 for a six-game total pinfall of 1152.

Marsh brought a 185 average into the tournament and topped that mark in four games. She finished with a 192 average for the day.

“I could have done better coming into today,” she said. “I had a plan, but it changed when I got here, because it was hooking a lot more than I thought it was going to.

The Section IV team placed third overall, posting a 6269 total pinfall, which was just 15 pins behind the team champion, Section VI by 100 pins, 3273-3173, after the first three games.

“I think we did pretty good as a team together,” Marsh said.

Section XI kicked it into high gear in the second round, rallying to fall to Section VI by a single point, 6284-6283, for the championship.

Sections XI, II and III were the only teams to improve their scores in the second round of games.

Dry lanes often become a factor in those situations.

“The second part of the two sessions, they're burned lanes already, so they've already been bowled on so it's a lot drier.”

Horseheads’ Emily Huntley was the individual runner-up, her 1326 series trailing only Eliana Occhino from Section III (1364).
