NY STATE GIRLS BOWLING: SVEC’S MARSH TO CLOSE OUT HIGH SCHOOL CAREER AT COMPOSITE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2023-03-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
SYRACUSE — Candor’s Janelle Marsh will close out her scholastic bowling career when she competes in the NYSPHSAA Girls Composite State Championships at Strike N’ Spare Lanes here Saturday.

The senior, who started bowling in 2020, has the COVID-19 pandemic to blame — or thank — for taking her from the basketball court to the lanes.

“I decided to start bowling when COVID hit and we weren't allowed to play basketball, but were still able to participate in bowling and I decided to stay bowling instead of going back to playing basketball,” she said.

Marsh, who carries a 185 average, broke the school record for high series twice in four days this season and also set a new mark for high game in the process. She rolled a 266 game and 661 series on Jan 17. Three days later, she posted a 664 series behind games of 220, 230 and 213.

Marsh, who placed third at the IAC tournament with a 596 series, won the Section IV Class D tournament with a 615 series. She scored a 215 high game and averaged 205 for the tournament. She was listed as 7th overall for the day, but her series tied the 5th- and 6th-place bowlers.

Those scores carried over to the state qualifier, where competitors had to bowl two series. In that tournament, Marsh shot 617 and 597 and finished 7th with a 9-game total of 1829. Her high game was 221.

Marsh received the No. 6 spot on the Section IV all-star squad as Colleen Jump of Union Springs / Port Byron will be competing in the team competition Friday. Jump was the overall individual champion, but US/PB also won the D-2 team title and she has to bowl in that tournament.

As far as competing in the state tournament goes, she plans to enjoy the experience.

“I would love to win at states, but my goals are go do my best, hit my mark consistently and to have fun since it's my last high school match!” Marsh said.

Bowling begins at 8 a.m.
