SECTION IV GIRLS BOWLING: SVEC’S MARSH QUALIFIES FOR STATES (2023-02-26)

Tioga County Sports Report
WAVERLY — At least one positive result has occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SVEC bowler Janelle Marsh is heading to the girls state championships.

The Candor senior traded in her basketball for a bowling ball as schools were allowed to compete in the latter during the pandemic. It paid off for Marsh as she earned a spot on the Section IV all-star team at Saturday’s state qualifier.

She rolled an 1829 series (203.22 average) over nine games — three games at the class sectional tournament last week followed by six more at the state qualifier.

Marsh finished seventh overall, but claimed the sixth spot on the all-star team. Colleen Jump of Union Springs / Port Byron won the individual title in Division II, but will compete in the team competition as US/PB won the team championship.

Joining Marsh on the all-star squad are Emily Huntley of Horseheads (1948 series), Maine-Endwell’s Rylee Roe (1938), Windsor’s Alexis Barton (1884), Halia Tallet of Greene / Oxford (1881), Catherine Fuller from Bainbridge-Guilford (1852) and alternate Brianna Fowlston of (Greene / Oxford (1768).

SVEC placed sixth out of the eight teams to qualify for the Division II tournament. The Eagles rolled a 6717 series.

US/PB posted an 8084 to top runner-up Windsor’s 8028. Unadilla Valley had a 7920, M-E recorded a 7904 and Sidney was fifth at 7116. Following SVEC were Groton at 6688 and Owego with a 6094.

The Eagles’ Kaitlyn Floyd placed 41st with a 1461, Calli Marsh was 49th at 1336, Kaydee Jackson finished 52nd with 1223 and Jennarose Reagan was 60th at 868.

Haley Stephens led Owego with a 1525 to finish 34th. Elizabeth Reigle claimed 50th with a 1326, Tori Kobylarz was 55th at 1154, Victoria Reigle came in 57th with a 977 (8 games) and Aubrey Garrison was 59th with a 718 (7 games).

Waverly's Shantilly Decker placed ninth with a 1740 and teammate Rachel Houseknecht took 27th with a 1584.

The state championships will be held March 10-12 at Strike ‘N Spare Lanes in Syracuse with the all-star tournament being held March 11.
