YOUTH BASKETBALL: WAVERLY RALLIES PAST HOST FOR 5th-GRADE TITLE AT CANDOR TOURNEY (2023-02-20)

CANDOR — The Waverly 5th-graders rallied from an early deficit to defeat Candor, 22-19, at the 2023 Candor Youth Association Boys Basketball Tournament Sunday.

The Wolverines took a 12-11 edge at the break on a Cooper Skovira jump shot with six seconds left in the first half.

Waverly opened the second half with a 9-2 run, but Candor rebounded from a 21-13 deficit to trim the margin to 21-19 with 15 ticks on the clock.

Drew Croft sank a free throw with 10.9 seconds to go and a Candor 3-point attempt hit the far side of the rim at the buzzer.

Skovira led all scorers with 11 points. Peyton Lawson put up five, Croft had four and Michael Hendershot added two more.

Bentlee Anderson paced the Indians with 10 points. Carter Cody, Aiden Cook, Logan Edwards and Linc Thomas contributed two points apiece, and Zach Hilbert tacked on one.

Other players for Candor were Sawyer Dawson, Lucas Edwards, Riley Guggenheim, Cam Labarre, Brock Rose and Liam Zacharias. The team was coached by Aidan Teribury and Nick Thomas.

The tournament included teams from Candor, Newark Valley, Newfield, S-VE, Tioga, Trumansburg and Waverly.
