YOUTH BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY 3rd/4th GRADERS PLACE SECOND AT CANDOR TOURNEY (2023-02-20)

CANDOR — The Newark Valley 3rd/4th-graders captured runner-up honors at the 2023 Candor Youth Association Boys Basketball Tournament Sunday.

NV fell in the championship game to Maine-Endwell, 24-22, despite a valiant comeback attempt.

M-E led 16-9 at the break and built a 13-point advantage midway through the second half.

The Cardinals battled back and cut the gap to 26-22 with 44 seconds remaining in the game.

NV’s Carter Gardner and M-E’s Trey Fisher shared scoring honors with 14 points apiece.

Gavin Matthews tacked on eight points for M-E, and Max Novotny and Braden Buckley added two points each.

Newark Valley received four points from Aiden Howe, and two points apiece from Blake Travis and William Wojtysiak.

Other players for NV were Ryder Ackley, Trystan Jerome, Treyton Sherwood and Zane Stauder for NV. The team was coached by Tim Wojtysiak and Chase Gardner.

The tournament included teams from M-E, Newark Valley, Newfield, S-VE, Trumansburg and Waverly, and two squads from Candor.
