TIOGA COUNTY SPORTS REPORT: OWEGO’S BANGEL, NEWARK VALLEY’S GARDNER NAMED TWIN TIER DUMPSTERS ‘ATHLETES OF THE WEEK’ (2023-01-23)

TIOGA COUNTY — Two of the local area’s top basketball players displayed their talents on the hardwoods this past week and have been chosen to receive the Twin Tier Dumpsters weekly honors.

OWEGO’S BANGEL IS BOYS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Owego senior John Bangel scored 20-plus points in two STAC boys basketball victories as the Indians registered their two highest-scoring outputs and improved to 11-3 on the season. points, respectively.

The Indians, ranked 21st in Class B, defeated Susquehanna, 76-54, and Norwich, 74-58, and Bangel scored 25 and 24 points, respectively.

For the week, he carried a 69-percent field goal percentage (20-for-29)and shot 82 percent (9-for-11) at the free throw line. Bangel also dominated the boards in both victories.

NEWARK VALLEY’S GARDNER IS GIRLS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Junior standout Cha Gardner recorded her first triple-double in a victory over rival Waverly.

She scored 17 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and blocked a dozen shots. Gardner also dished out four assists and grabbed two steals.

In a 72-36 win over Trumansburg, she recorded 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
