IAC WRESTLING: SVEC’S SOTO, NEAL SECOND AT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (2023-01-21)

WAVERLY — SVEC’s Kaleb Soto and Shane Neal led the Eagles at the IAC Wrestling Championships Saturday, each garnering a runner-up showing.

Competing at 118 pounds, Soto pinned Schuyler’s Riley Yaw in 1:25, then outpointed Moravia’s Hunter Boynton, 14-7. He took on Tioga’s Jayden Duncanson in the championship bout, dropping a 16-0 technical fall.

Neal opened with a 10-2 major decision over Parker Larson of Waverly at 138, then decked Dryden’s Dean Belden in 1:37. Neal nipped John Woodcock of Tioga, 5-4, before losing an 8-3 decision to Newark Valley Cadin Creeley in the championship round.

John Johnston placed third at 172. He won by fall over over Nate Peters of Waverly in 1:58 and built a 10-0 lead over Peter Basti of Newark Valley before Basti regrouped to score a fall at 2:32 in the semifinals. He pinned Jeremy Miller of Schuyler in 21 seconds, then blanked Marathon’s Julian Spizzirri with a 10-0 major decision to claim third.

At 110, Rodney Vaow took fourth. He started with a 4-3 decision over Logan Woodin of Newark Valley, but lost his next bout by a 15-0 tech fall against Aidan Shufelt of Groton. He recovered with an 8-1 win against Caden Bradley of Waverly to face Woodin for third. This time, the NV grappler won by a 17-2 tech fall.Brennan Zimmer
