TIOGA CENTER — The history of the Candor-Tioga boys basketball series is filled with grueling battles right down to the final seconds — Tuesday’s IAC South Small School clash is among them.
In the end, the Tigers rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to pull out a 55-54 squeaker.
The Indians were up, 34-21, two minutes into the third quarter following a Zeb Soper 3-pointer, but that was when things went south.
Candor went cold on offense, scoring just three more points after that to head into the fourth quarter with a 36-34 edge. The Indians were up at halftime, 31-20.
Tioga’s Evan Sickler scored eight of his game-high 24 points in the final frame and Ethan Perry went 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Candor took the opening period, 10-9, but outscored the home team, 19-9, in Q2 on the strength of three Jadon Heidl 3-pointers.
Soper paced the Indians with 18 points and 13 rebounds, to go with three steals and a block. Cooper Thayer added seven points, going 7-for-8 at the charity stripe, and added three boards, two blocks and an assist.
Jakobe Foster scored six points, and had four rebounds, three steals and three assists; Lucas Heidl had six points, four boards, three steals, one block and one assist; and Jacek Teribury added five points, four assists, two blocks, two rebounds and one steal.
Sickler posted a double-double for Tioga, grabbing 15 rebounds to add to his two dozen markers. Gavin Fisher contributed 11 points and six rebounds; Valentino Rossi added nine points and 11 boards; Perry chipped in with eight points and three rebounds; and Shea Bailey and Karson Sindoni tacked on points and one point, respectively.
With the win, Tioga moves to 4-3 in the division and 6-4 overall while Candor slips to 4-4 and 7-6.
The Indians head to Union Springs Friday.
