IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE DOWNS CANDOR, 44-35 (2023-01-19)

CANDOR — Candor and S-VE were looking to bounce back from tough divisional losses Wednesday and the Panthers rode a third-quarter surge to a 44-35 IAC South Small School girls basketball victory.
The Indians started the game strong, pouring in 14 first-quarter points. Emmi Makie made two baskets and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Additional buckets were made by Hazel Ray and Nicola Soper.
Candor’s 14-7 lead evaporated in the second frame as they went several minutes without scoring. The Panthers, however, got hot from behind the 3-point arc, getting treys from Aubrie Kastenhuber And Mariah Cooper. The teams were deadlocked at 18 at the half.
Spencer would gain all the momentum they would need with a 15-6 third as five Panthers would find the scoring column.
The Indians battled to the last minute, keeping pace with an 11-11 final frame.
Abby Bunce recorded a double-double for the Panthers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She went 5-for-10 at the free throw line, making her last six, and also had three steals and two blocks.
Kara Morse posted a double-double for Candor with 10 points and 13 rebounds, and added six blocks.
For S-VE, Kastenhuber drained three threes, and tacked on an assist and a rebound. Marah Cooper contributed a pair of 3-pointers, six boards, four assists and a block; Raegan Sudnikovich had four points, seven rebounds, an assistant a steal; Taya Sousa chipped in with four points, four steals, two blocks, two assists and a rebound; Gabby Evans had one three and an assist; Adriana Farmer added two steals and a rebound; and Faith Brenchley tacked on two boards.
Emmi Makie recorded 11 points and two rebounds for Candor; Hazel Ray pitched in with eight points and eight rebounds; Nicola Soper had four points, seven rebounds and five steals; Malley Heidl contributed two points, five rebounds and six steals; Maggie Jennison had two steals and Luci Ray added three rebounds.
Candor hosts Union Springs Friday while S-VE travels to Marathon.
