THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S FREEMAN HEADLINES BOYS 'NEWCOMERS OF THE FALL;' FOUR FROM TIOGA COUNTY MAKE THE LIST (2022-12-26)

Nearly every team in the Twin Tiers had a varsity newcomer that made an impact in the fall of 2022.

Sophomore James Freeman made an impact on both sides of the ball, helping the Corning football team to a Section IV, Class AA title. He headlines The Sports Reports’ 2022 All-Region Baker’s Dozen as the Boys “Newcomer of the Fall."

Freeman ran for 570 yards on the year and had eight catches. He was the second-leading tackler on the team with 73 tackles.

Freeman came up big in big spots, with 13 tackles in the sectional final and 12 tackles against Cicero-North Syracuse in the regional final. He also rushed for 140 yards, and caught a TD pass in the Hawks’ Section IV, Class AA title win over Elmira.

James Freeman, sophomore, Corning football: See above.

Holden Ward, sophomore, Canton football:
Ward came on at mid-season as the coordinator of the option offense for the Warriors, and ended up being a strong threat throughout the playoffs. He finished with 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns, while also throwing for a touchdown. … Defensively, he filled in with 29 tackles, two interceptions, and a QB sack.

Magavin Allen, freshman, Owego cross country:
Allen worked his way past a couple of teammates during the season to become the Indians’ No. 2 runner. He placed fifth at the Section IV Class C championships, earning a spot in the state meet, where he was 62nd out of 131 runners.

Bradock Salisbury, junior, Horseheads football: Salisbury ran for 605 yards, and six TDs on 58 carries (10.43 yards carry), and had six receptions for 62 yards. … Defensively, he had six solo tackles.

Trent Browne, junior, Tioga footbal:
Browne had 60 tackles, including 20 solo stops, and two tackles-for-losses. He had one QB sack, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries on Tioga’s state championship team. … He was also a terror on Tioga’s special teams coverage teams.

Jake VanHouten, junior, Waverly football: VanHouten had 34 receptions for 473 yards, and three TDs for Waverly’s Section IV, Class C title team. … Defensively, VanHouten had 38 tackles, including 15 solo stops, from his defensive back position. He also had three interceptions.

Will Gastrock, sophomore, Wellsboro football: Gastrock threw for 453 yards, rushed for 149 yards, and added 48 receiving yards. He accounted for seven TDs. … Defensively, he had 69 tackles.


Alex Citrino, sophomore, Wellsboro soccer: Citrino had 13 assists, and five goals for the Hornets in their NTL championship season.

Sam Brenen-Buseck, junior, Elmira soccer:  Brenen-Buseck had seven shutouts in goal for the Express this season, and rarely gave up goals in open play. Of the goals he did allow this year, two were on penalty kicks and two on own-goals.

Jake Browne, sophomore, Tioga soccer:
A first-year soccer player, Browne’s athleticism turned him into an instant success as goal keeper for the Tigers. He had 124 saves this season, including 23 in one game.

Sawyer Robinson, sophomore, Towanda football:
Robinson finished with 70 tackles on the year, and four sacks, while also being a key contributor on their offensive line.

Ashtyn Traugott-Knoll, junior, Elmira soccer:
Ashtyn was tied for the team lead in goals this year with eight.  His athleticism and speed were difficult for opponents to defend.

Kayon Flint, sophomore, Elmira football: Flint rushed for 289 yards on just 33 carries (8.8 yards per carry), and three TDs. He also had a 43-yard touchdown catch. … Defensively, he had 22 tackles, with five tackles-for-loss, and 15 solo tackles.
