THE SPORTS REPORTS: SVEC'S BANKS, YOUNG, OWEGO'S DE MICHELE EARN TOP HONORS ON BOYS SOCCER ALL-REGION TEAMS; TIOGA COUNTY WELL-REPRESENTED (2022-12-23)

The Sports Reports
Boys’ soccer teams in the Twin Tiers were right there with some of the best teams in the state in 2022.

Two teams gave state champions their best fight in the postseason, and there were all-state standouts, league and sectional champions, and plenty of highlights throughout the fall.

Choosing The Sports Reports All-Region teams meant considering some of the best players across two states.

The Corning Hawks won the Class AA Sectional title in New York. They took on eventual state champion Scarsdale at states, falling 4-2. They were the only team to score on Scarsdale at states.

The Hawks Liam Bayne anchored the midfield for the Corning Hawks. He had 10 goals and six assists, while controlling the middle of the field. Bayne, who spent the previous two years not playing for Corning as he was part of the MLS Next Academy, is this year’s All-Region “Player of the Year.”

Spencer Van-Etten / Candor’s Jacob Banks and Addison Young both had dominant years and it’s only fitting that they share the “Offensive Player of the Year” honors, as the two shared the IAC MVP this year.

Banks had 34 goals and 20 assists, and was fourth-team all state, while Young had 40 goals and 18 assists and was fifth-team all-state.

Across the border in Pennsylvania, the Wellsboro Hornets had another strong season, winning an NTL title. Peyton McClure was the anchor for the Hornets defense. He was an all-state player, and the NTL Player of the Year, and he is the All-Region “Defensive Player of the Year.”

The Wellsboro Hornets goalie, Aiden Gehman, had nine shutouts in net and he is the “Goalie of the Year.”

Elmira goalie Sam Brenen-Buseck had seven shutouts in goal for the Express and he is the “Newcomer of the Year.”

Owego, was 15-2 on the year, with their only losses 2-1 to Corning and 1-0 in overtime to state champion Skaneateles, which won a third straight Class B state title. Their coach, Alessio De Michele is this year’s All-Region "Coach of the Year.”

The first team includes: Banks, Young, McClure, Gehman, Bayne and Brenen-Buseck, along with Owego’s Jace Riegel and Vasil Brich, Wellsboro’s Jack Poirier and Caden Smith, Corning’s Carter Rosno, Nate Freelove, Rowan Rosno and Colton Loeber, Elmira’s Shane Heifferon, Horseheads’ Matt Mucci, Athens’ Brayden Post and Alex Campbell, Tioga’s Tyler Roe and Waverly’s Griff Schillmoeller.

The second team includes NEB’s Joe Stanton, Waverly’s Sam Knight, Athens’ Korey Miller, Jack Rollison of Owego, SVEC’s Noah Banks and Newark Valley’s James Wales.
