THE SPORTS REPORTS: ALLEN EARNS TOP HONOR, OWEGO WELL-REPRESENTED ON ALL-REGION CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS; POWERHOUSE CORNING DOMINATES (2022-12-21)

The Sports Reports
Corning continued to dominate on the cross-country course in 2022, with their boys winning their second straight Class A New York State title, while the girls finished fourth at states.

That’s why they have three of the six major award winners, beginning with Sarah Lawson as the All-Region Girls’ “Runner of the Year.”

Lawson was the Section IV and STAC champion, along with taking sixth at states.

Ashton Bange is the “Co-Runner of the Year” for boys. He was seventh at states, along with being a sectional and STAC champion.

And coach Ray Lawson is the boys’ “Coach of the Year.” He led the Hawks to another state, Section IV, and STAC team titles.

CV’s Kristian Mizdail is the other “Co-Runner of the Year” for boys. He was the NTL Runner of the Year, took second at districts - losing to the eventually state champion - and was 11th in the Class AA championships.

Northeast Bradford’s Adam Russell is the girls’ “Coach of the Year.” Russell led the Panthers to the NTL and district titles by wide margins.

The girls’ “Newcomer of the Year” is Elmira’s Ella Devlin. Devlin was a state qualifier and was a top five finisher at sectionals.

The boys’ “Newcomer of the Year” is Owego’s Magavin Allen was a state qualifier for Owego in Class C.

The girls’ first team is made up of Lawson, along with her fellow Hawks Sadie Beres and Lauren Roche, Northeast Bradford’s Gracelyn Laudermilch and Anaiah Kolesar, Elmira’s Ana Mordvinova and Devlin, and Athens’ Sara Bronson.

On the second team are Horseheads’ Mackenzie Baker, Owego’s Jaelyn Chrysler, Corning’s Cassandra Collings, Elmira’s Payton Ross, Troy’s Alyssa Parks, Waverly’s Elizabeth Vaughn, Athens’ Emma Bronson, and Wyalusing’s Kayla Beebe.

On the third team are Corning’s Taylor Farrell, Ella Grinnell, and Megan McLaughlin, Owego’s LillyMay Wheeland, and Abigail Fahey, Notre Dame’s Piper Young, Wyalusing’s Megan King, and Waverly’s Harper Minaker.

The All-Newcomer team is Devlin, Kolesar, King, Wheeland, Roche, and Baker.

The boys’ first team is Bange, along with teammates Tevin McLaren, Marcus Homa, and DJ Cornfield, Mizdail, and his teammate Owen Cummings, Owego’s Jace Stuart, and Northeast Bradford’s Creed Dewing.

On the second team are Cowanesque Valley’s Nathaniel Welch, Corning’s Jaxyn Mahoney, Joshua Beres, and Gabe Cornfield, Elmira’s Caleb Belanger, Horseheads’ Kiran Gulati, Owego’s Magavin Allen, and SVEC’s Johnathan Garrison.

On the third team are Horseheads’ Cael Owen, Owego’s Sullivan O’Donnell, Wyalusing’s Jeremy Clauser, and Trennan Tewksbury, Athens’ Ethan Hicks, and Ethan Denlinger, Towanda’s Eric McGee, and Northeast Bradford’s Norman Strauss.

The All-Newcomer team is Allen, Northeast Bradford’s Dayton Russell, Notre Dame’s Gavin Meier, Wyalusing’s Brody Fuhrey, and Troy’s Brody Campbell and Lucas Loxley.
