THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S LAWSON, TIOGA'S MACUMBER NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (November 14, 2022)
The Sports Reports Corning junior Sarah Lawson turned in a
top-10 performance at the New York State, Class A cross country
championships, while Tioga junior Drew Macumber had a career game to
lead the Tigers to a Section IV, Class D football title. They are The Sports Reports / Ziff Law Firm Regional “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending Nov. 12.
(Note: This is the final Regional “Athlete of the Week” of the fall season.)
CORNING’S LAWSON NAMED GIRLS REGIONAL “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK” Lawson
was a 12th-place finisher at states as a sophomore. On Saturday at the
NYSPHSAA Class A Championships, she cut that number in half, finishing
sixth in 18:44.
Not only was Lawson sixth in Class A, she had the
eighth best time of any runner in any of the four classes in the state.
a total of 459 runners between the four state races.
On top of
her sixth-place finish individually, Lawson led the Hawks to a
fourth-place finish as a team, matching the best finish ever by the
Corning girls at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships.
Honorable mentions were: Waverly’s Elizabeth Vaughn (cross country), and Owego’s Jaelyn Chrysler (cross country).
TIOGA’S MACUMBER NAMED BOYS REGIONAL “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK” Macumber
rushed for 199 yards and three TDs to lead Tioga in a 42-14 win over
Delhi in the Section IV, Class D championship game.
It was Macumber’s third straight 100-yard plus game, and fourth on the season. He now has 1,047 yards on the season.
Macumber also recorded eight tackles in the win.

Gabe Cornfield (cross country), Waverly’s Joey Tomasso (football),
Canton’s Riley Parker (football), and SVEC’s Jon Garrison (cross
country).
