SECTION IV GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING: OWEGO’S MURPHY 4TH IN FLY AT CLASS B MEET (2022-11-06)

ENDWELL — Owego’s Ava Murphy came into the Section IV Class B Girls Swimming & Diving Championships as the seventh seed in the 100-yard butterfly.
The 8th-grader moved up to No. 5 following Wednesday’s preliminaries. On Saturday, she climbed another step higher, touching the wall with a 4th-place time of 1:06.57, trimming more than 2.6 seconds off her seed time.
She also placed eighth in the 200 freestyle in 2:17.2. The 10th seed coming in (2:24.08), she knocked close to nine seconds off her seed time in the prelims (2:15.09).
Olivia Schrader placed sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:34.97) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:10.11). She entered the meet with a seed time of 2:43.72 in the medley and 1:15.77 in the back.
Murphy and Schrader joined Madison Allen and Isabelle Taylor to take seventh in the 200 medley relay (2:21.23), and with Allen and Sydney Shoen to finish eighth in the 200 free relay (2:06.23).
Allen contributed a 16th-place showing in the 200 free (2:33.84) and the 500 free (7:03.66).
NOTE: Kaelyn Katchuk broke two records en route to her third consecutive Class B diving championship Friday. She scored 507.4 points to break Kailee Payne’s mark of 486.95 in 2018. She also broke the M-E pool record of 470.6 points set by Corning’s Brooke Terwilliger in 2021. Terwilliger won this year’s Class A title with 500.95 points.
