SECTION IV BOYS SOCCER: SVEC DROPS BATTLE OF STATE-RANKED TEAMS (2022-10-02)

HARPURSVILLE — Section IV is the only section in the state to have two top 10-ranked teams in Class C.

On Saturday afternoon, No. 6 SVEC and No. 10 Afton / Harpursville clashed with the Knights escaping with a 2-1 victory.

A/H scored the game-winning goal with three minutes remaining in the contest.

The Knights would score a goal in each half although the Eagles would tie the game at one on a goal by Addison Young which was assisted by Jason Jantz.

SVEC took 19 shots to A/H’s 11 and the teams were even at three corner kicks apiece.

Kody Goble was solid in goal for the Eagles, making eight saves. Afton had three in improving to 11-1.

“It’s a day that we really struggled to get the ball in frame and they did not,” said SVEC co-coach Gary Holmes. “Our bright spot was excellent goal-keeping by Kody.”

SVEC (10-2), which saw it’s 9-game win streak come to an end, returns to IAC action Tuesday hosting Newark Valley.
