COLLEGE SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY DUO EARNS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE HONORS (2022-08-16)

ROCHESTER — Newark Valley grads Marissa Berghorn and Cassidy Hoffmier earned Easton / National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2021-22 academic year for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The Golden Flyers team ranked 11th among NCAA Division III institutions for the 2021-22 season with a team GPA of 3.7 as released by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association / Easton on Aug. 1.

Joining Berghorn and Hoffmier were teammates Hailie Bennett, Marissa, Justine Brooks, Maggie Burdick, Emily Daciw, Maddie Funk, Brooke Hailston, Jessica Keller, Jessica Klem, Cat Moores, Megan Pum, Katie Schmidt and Sarah Simmons. Nazareth had 14 of the 7,527 student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Nazareth went 8-6 in the Empire 8 Conference this past spring and 18-19 overall.

Berghorn and Hoffmier were among four Flyers to play in all 37 games.

Berghorn was fourth on the team in batting average (.306), going 38-for-124. She had eight doubles, a triple and a double, drove in 27 runs and scored 12 more. She carried a .411 slugging percentage, .336 on-base average and .972 fielding percentage. A catcher, Berghorn was named to the Empire 8 second-team.

Hoffmier was sixth in batting average (.270), going 34-for-126. She hit 10 doubles, scored 18 runs and had 18 RBI. She held a .349 slugging percentage, .287 on-base percentage and .861 fielding percentage. Hoffmier was named to the Empire 8 all-tournament team at shortstop.

Both players are entering their junior seasons.
