YOUTH SOFTBALL: OWEGO 10U FINISHES SECOND TO WAVERLY (2022-07-27)

OWEGO — Waverly 1 made a 5-run first inning hold up for a 6-3 victory over Owego in the championship game of the Owego 10U Girls Softball Tournament.

Bhree North, Sydney Donovan, Kendall North, Jaylynn Lantz and Raygane Oakes accounted for the runs. The Norths smacked triples while Donovan and Oakes hit doubles.

Owego got three of the runs back in the bottom of the third. Emma Cornell hit a home run, Lydia Chase doubled and scored, and Alannah Hall also scored.

Waverly added an insurance run in the fifth when Oakes reached safely to lead off the inning and eventually scored.

Owego bested Waverly 2 in the semifinals, 7-4, on the strength of a Cornell grand slam.

The dinger came during a 5-run fifth inning surge that put Owego ahead, 7-3.

Waverly scored twice in the top of the first and Owego scored once in its half of the inning when Cora Henderson made it safely around the bases.

Trailing, 3-1, Owego added another run in the fourth with Lydia Chase crossing the plate.

Cornell’s grand slam also plated Megan Card, Henderson and Avery Schneider.

Paxton Marsh scored earlier in the inning to make it a 3-3 contest.

Entering the tourney, Owego was unbeaten and the No. 1 seed.

Team members are Megan Card, Lydia Chase, Megan Cornell, Kayleigh Gleason, Alannah Hall, Cora Henderson, Paxton Marsh, Lily Mikels, Savannah Rosenberger, Avery Schneider and Sarah Wheeler.
