FORMER CANDOR ATHLETE TO BE HONORED WITH NYSPHSAA HALL OF FAME INDUCTION (2022-07-26)

Tioga County Sports Report
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Former Candor athlete Fred Ahart will be honored posthumously at the 2022 New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame induction ceremony to be held here Wednesday.

The 1965 Candor graduate participated in football, basketball, baseball and track & field, and eventually became a football and basketball coach, and an athletic administrator in the Roscoe Central School District in Section IX.

Ahart, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education at Ithaca College, was an assistant football coach at Newfield and a junior varsity basketball coach at Candor prior to heading to Roscoe.

His career at Roscoe, where he was the varsity football and basketball coach, spanned five decades. He also served as the Roscoe athletic director from 1969-2020.

Ahart was a member of the NYSPHSAA Boys Basketball Committee as the Section IX Coordinator, and also served as the Section IX President, chairman of the Eligibility Committee and was on the athletic council. He was a two-time recipient of the New York State Athletic Administrator of the Year award twice.

Ahart coached the Blue Devils to 142 wins and four Section IX championships in football, and 484 victories on the basketball court. Roscoe won four sectional titles and five league titles under his mentorship.

In 2014, the Roscoe gym was named the Coach Fred Ahart Gymnasium, and on Dec. 5, 2018 that very gym was the site of his 1,000th basketball game as a coach.

Ahart was inducted into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was also honored earlier this year by the New York State Athletic Administrators Association with their Wall of Honor award for his contributions to the NYSAAA.

The Coach Fred Ahart Foundation, a charitable organization, was started in his memory and the first annual Fred Ahart Foundation Games were held in January.

The foundation’s Facebook page can be found at The Coach Fred Ahart Foundation.
