LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL: OWEGO CORDERO CAPTURES OWEGO TOURNAMENT 10U ‘A’ CHAMPIONSHIP (2022-07-24)

OWEGO — Owego Cordero split a pair of high-scoring games with Union-Endicott Vassil in the “A” Division championship round of the Owego Little League 10U Tournament at Hyde Park Saturday.

After dropping a 20-19 verdict to force a second game, Owego claimed the title with a 14-10 win in game two.

GAME 1: U-E 20, OWEGO 19
U-E scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pick up the win, overshadowing a 27-hit performance by Owego.

The Indians scored six runs in the top of the first, but U-E came back in the second to go ahead, 7-6. Owego added five runs in the fourth and led 11-10 after the inning concluded.

The Indians led, 18-16, heading into the final stanza.

Eight Owego players collected three or more hits apiece.

Nick Tavelli was 4-for-4 with a double, four runs and three RBI; and Truett Hall went 4-for-5 with a triple, double, three runs and two RBI.

Max Schrader was 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI; Adam Harvey went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI; Colby Cordero was 3-for-5 with three runs; Rocco Canfield was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI; Max Buchsbaum went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI; and Harrison Miller was 3-for-5 with a run. Jagger Chrysler added a run and three RBI.

Schrader, Harvey and Tavelli shared the pitching duties.

GAME 2: OWEGO 14, U-E 10
They may let the first one slip away, but not the decisive contest. In fact, the Indians staged an impressive comeback from a 9-4 deficit — with five runs in each of the final two frames — to win in extra innings.

Hall paced the sixth inning surge with an RBI double. Buchsbaum, Cordero, Canfield, Schrader and Tavelli contributed singles with Canfield, Schrader and Tavelli adding RBIs.

Owego outscored U-E, 5-1, in the seventh (no information recorded in GameChanger).

Cordero was 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs as Owego compiled 15 hits. Canfield was 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI; Schrader went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI; and Buchsbaum was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Hall went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI; Harrison was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI; Tavelli and Harvey both contributed a hit and an RBI; and Chrysler had a hit.

Owego finished the tournament with a 5-2 record.

NOTE: Owego's Rocco Canfield won the 10U home run derby.
